Useful & fun

There are tons of websites about making websites: a Google search turned up 800,000. There's even one with the name Making Websites that looks like this:

Hmmm... ? Let's skip past that one.

Turns out there are many better choices, including A List Apart, Evolt, W3Schools, and one I hadn't seen before, Smashing Magazine.

As often happens, in the same day's email a couple of web links pointed to Smashing, so I thought I'd better take a look. The site describes itself as a resource for web designers and developers created by Sven Lennartz and Vitaly Friedman. Their tagline puts it more colorfully: We smash you with the information that will make your life easier, really.

The titles of other popular articles give you a sense of the site's slightly over-hyped approach: 25 Useful WYSIWYG Web Editors, 53 CSS Techniques You Couldn't Live Without, 50 Beautiful Designs, 40+ Free Fonts for Professional Design, and so on.

In general the writing is cheery and interesting, easy to read and informative. If Smashing were a newspaper it would be USA Today, with A List Apart being New York Times, and Evolt the Wall Street Journal. Each different but all worth reading, depending on your interest.
