Sounded easy

Back in May I planted my first batch of potatoes using a clever method called "potato towers." Things didn't start off well, but eventually I had two 3-foot towers filled with dirt, straw, and seed potatoes.

Small potatoes on groundThe instructions said at harvest time, when the plants had died back, "simply tip over the potato bin and pick out the potatoes."

I did, and here's my harvest from the first tower.

Haven't checked the second yet, but I don't have much hope for a different fate.

The problem may be that I didn't have enough compost and used topsoil instead. It packed down over time, maybe too much for the potatoes to grow properly.
