Snowfall

Snow-covered sign for Phnom Penh restaurant

Last night and today we had our first real snowfall of the winter. Soft, picturesque flakes floating down hour after hour. It was lovely.

When I walked down West 25th St. to the West Side Market this symbol of Cambodia seemed a long, long way from home.

With about eight inches of snow on the ground, walking was a bit of a trial where it hadn't been shoveled, which was almost everywhere.

It was worse where a snowplow had passed nearby. Cleared roads = big ramparts of snow to be crossed where the sidewalk meets the intersection. And private plow services are the pedestrian's enemy: when clearing parking lots they pay no attention to where they push the snow, sometimes completely blocking big sections of sidewalk. Grrrr.
