Getting around a city that you've never been to before can be one of the most stressful parts of your vacation. This is where public transportation comes in handy. Immediately after you get settled in the first thing you should do is take a leisurely bus tour of the city. It's a great way to do some sight seeing without the stress of getting lost. This can also give you ideas on what sights you might want to spend time on.
While we were in London we bought a week-long pass for a bus tour and just used that as our means to get to where we wanted to go. It wasn't as direct a path to our destinations as a normal bus, but the buses went near the historic sights for the tour, and we just got off at the appropriate stop. Besides, we weren't in any rush, and you shouldn't be either. Sight seeing tours may be cliché, but they're fun and you know it.
