I love it, I hate it.

Steelyard sign through the car windshield

Today's paper had an article about the opening of the first store—Home Depot—at Steelyard Commons, the first big-box shopping center in the city itself.

Driving home from work every night I pass the tall towers with the word STEELYARD in red neon, and it seems both good and bad. The abandoned steel mill site transformed into a huge parking lot with lots of nondescript one-story commercial buildings is a mixed blessing.

As someone who's lived in Cleveland, not greater Cleveland, but Cleveland itself for his whole life, I'm looking forward to being able to go to Target or Home Depot without driving out to the 'burbs. It's about a 10 minute drive from my house.

The giant WalMart due to open in a few months I could definitely do without. I'll admit to having bought things at WalMart on occasion, usually because it was the only place I could find a particular item. But I've got a number of worries about this new store, especially the effect it may have on our local Dave's grocery store.
