Maurice Ashley is the first and only International African-American Grandmaster of Chess. Originally born in Jamaica, Ashley and his family moved to Brooklyn where at age 12, Ashley began to play chess. Ashley feels it is his mission to open doors for minority children through chess. He has coached many Harlem student teams, several of them reaching national championship levels. Ashley is currently the live chess commentator for matches that appear on the sports channel ESPN.
