What is a Zombie?

First we will go into what a Zombie actually is. It's good to get a better understanding on what the difference is between the undead and a zombie.

Undead:

  1. no longer alive but animated by a supernatural force, as a vampire or zombie.
  2. neither dead nor alive. living dead.

What these definitions means is that other creatures such as a vampire can be called undead and it also classifies zombies as being no longer alive. Unfortunately not all zombies are undead. There are several forms of zombies through history that did not actually die before becoming a zombie.

Zombie History

One thing that makes zombies different from other western mythology is the fact that they do not come from a European gothic tradition. Instead, the zombie story originates in Haiti. This is where West Africans were brought and traded as slaves to work on the sugar plantations. As a part of the voodoo religion, Haitians believe that magicians called bokors, or houngans, can revive the recently dead, turning them into mindless, soulless servants called zombies. Zombies remain under the control of the bokor since they have no will of their own. Believers in voodoo will guard the grave of deceased relatives until they are certain that it has begun to decay, for the magic only works on fresh bodies. "Zombi" is also another name of the Voodoo snake god Damballah Wedo. There also exists within the voudon tradition the zombi astral which is a human soul that is captured by a bokor and used to enhance the bokor's power.

Modern zombies, as portrayed in books, films, games, and haunted attractions, are quite different from both voodoo zombies and those of folklore. Modern zombies are typically depicted in popular culture as mindless, unfeeling monsters with a hunger for human flesh.

Usually, zombies are not thralls to masters, modern zombies come in mobs and waves, seeking either flesh to eat or people to kill or infect. They are generally incapable of communication and show no signs of personality or rationality.

Zombie Survival

Preparation

You need to be prepared for what's to come. What's the number one must have? An emergency survival kit of course! Make sure to learn as much as you can to broaden your knowledge on what to do in various situations.

Make sure every week that you take the time to think and make plans about what you would do in different situations. Mental preparation is one of the most important components of successful survival. The more you practice in your head about what you would do, the easier it will be to react when that time comes.

Physical condition is also key to a successful survival! Be able to squeeze in some time to workout during the day. You may be caught in a situation where you are in combat and need to run. You don't want to be slowed down because of your fitness because then you will become food.

Food and Water

Sure, you're able to knockout zombies left and right and in your sleep, but that's not going to keep you alive very long. Food and water is essential to survive! If you don't get enough food and water you will become physically and mentally fatigued which will lead to making mistakes that could cost you your life. There is absolutely no room for errors when it comes to zombie battle.

Shelter and Combat

Not only is shelter going to protect you from the zombies, it's going to protect you from mother nature as well. You definitely do not want to be in the same place as zombies but sometimes that is not going to be so easy. You are never going to be able to predict where zombies are going to be when you travel. This is where zombie combat skills come into play. It's going to be a good idea to develop some sort of weapon proficiency. Weapons are going to give you a great advantage in any and all defense and attack strategies.

First Aid

First aid knowledge isn't going to save you from a zombie bite but it's still good knowledge you have. You're constantly going to be running from zombies which is going to increase the risk of injury. First aid is going to be more beneficial when you have the training and education under your belt. The American Red Cross offers courses in first aid and CPR as well as more information on disaster first aid.
