Introduction to Interactive Design
-Al Wasco, Herron School of Art, Indianapolis, IN (July 1999)

WHAT THIS CLASS IS ABOUT
The objective is to develop in each student and the class as a whole...

  • A basic understanding of how people communicate, with special emphasis on narrative and storytelling.
  • An awareness of the development of computer-based electronic media, and a critical appreciation of current work in the field.
  • An enthusiasm and a personal vision for the potential of the medium.
  • The ability to develop and present an idea to others in stages, solicit their response, and use this to improve the project.
  • Technical proficiency with a core set of software tools used to create interactive media.

THE CLASS IS INTENDED TO HELP YOU DEVELOP...
SKILLS, your ability to:

  • Critically analyze and discuss--verbally and in writing--the work of others and your own.
  • Learn from the comments of others without sacrificing your own unique vision.
  • Work effectively individually and as part of a group.
  • Work proficiently with software/hardware, including Macromedia Director, SoundEdit, and others; audio and video recording equipment, scanners, cameras, etc.

PROFESSIONALISM, a way of working that allows you to:

  • Approach each assignment as an opportunity to solve a problem in a unique way.
  • Communicate about your project clearly throughout ALL stages of development.
  • Continually compare your results to your goals, be willing to revise and even start over if necessary.
  • Ask for help when you need it; share your knowledge whenever possible.
  • Work hard, even when things do not t seem to be going well (never give up on yourself!).

HOW YOUR WORK WILL BE EVALUATED...

  • The thought and effort that you put into discussions, in-class and homework assignments is critical, and counts for 30% of your grade. Missing class, coming in late, and/or missing assignments can seriously lower your grade!
  • Projects will be evaluated on how well they meet the project objectives, the care shown in the execution, and your success in meeting the goals under Professionalism above.
  • Group projects will be graded on both the quality of the project and your participation in the process.
  • Specific technical skills may be tested with written and/or hands-on quizzes.

Your final grade is based on:
Participation (includes attendance)       30 pts.
Homework & in-class assignments       30 pts.
Projects       40 pts.
TOTAL     100 pts.

(100-90 pts. = A / 89-80 pts. = B / 79-70 pts. = C / 69-60 pts. = D / below 60 pts. = F)
