Web design tips series starts this month

From the "why reinvent the wheel" department: we're presenting a three-part series of web design tips for beginners in our RESOURCES section, which grew out of work I'd done for a class.

Early in June I taught a 1-1/2 day workshop optimistically titled Website in a Weekend. In preparation I gathered together the books, articles & online sources I've accumulated over the years and tried to condense the information into a brief set of Do's and Don'ts. Of course they're only my particular slant on things, but I hope they will be of use to you.

We'll start with Writing for the Web, Visual Design, and Color. Take a look, and send me your reactions.

Search no more: we're in the book
Got an email today that we're listed in the new book by Ken Coupland, SEARCH: The Graphics Web Guide. I haven't seen the book itself yet, but here's how the publisher describes it:

SEARCH is a handy reference work that places at your fingertips 500 capsule reviews of Web sites of interest to graphic designers, typographers, illustrators, photographers, and film- and video-makers... Compact and easy to use, SEARCH provides a timely survey of everything that's happening design-wise on the Web. Whether you're a professional, teacher or student - or you're just interested in design, this invaluable resource will make it easy to find everything you want to know online.

If you'd like to find out for yourself, you can order it here.

Look out Scandinavia, here we come!
In early August I'll be visiting Denmark, Norway & Sweden. I'd love to talk with designers and design educators while I'm there, so if you're one of them and would like to get together for a coffee or beer and conversation, please email me. I'll be in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo, plus points in between.

MY FAVORITE EMAIL:

Hi Al:
I have been going through boxes and found your book of international symbols. If you have missed it, I am sorry. I can send it through the mail.

I'm living six blocks for the Mississippi in the crescent city. Making masks, ignoring technology. It took me eight months and a new girlfriend to hook up a telephone. The South, what can I say.

If you want your book give me your address or come down and get it. If you write back soon give me a little time to respond, I want to send a lagniappe as interest.
